by NickB on October 2, 2009

Ok guys after almost 250+ applications (for some reason 70 or so came via email instead of being posted as comments???) it came down to two people. I couldn’t pick between the two so I decided to pick both. I am going to mentor one at a time. Before I reveal the winners I am going to go over a few things. When I first made this post I set a 30 words or less but for whatever reason 70% of people decided to ignore that limit. I am sorry but I had to disqualify anybody who went over 30 words. I did not count “Hi Nick”, or sign off’s in the 30 words. I set the 30 word limit because I was looking for somebody:

1. Who pays attention to detail and can follow clear instructions: I didn’t want a lapdog who would follow my lead without questioning me. However, at the same time I didn’t want somebody who would ignore me and not listen to me. This is going to be a mentor/mentee relationship and things will go much more smoothly if the person I pick sticks to what I say. So the 30 words or less limit was a test.

2. Who was innovative, laid back and funny: I really wanted somebody who could sell themselves in 30 words or less. I was also looking for somebody who made me laugh. And I wanted somebody who could bend the rules. If I am going to spend 2 month training somebody I don’t want to be bored to tears, so I was looking for humour not sob stories.

So my first pick is NavyGirl, she’s in the Australia Defence Force.

Submitted on 2009/09/30 at 11:07pm, NavyGirl:
Nick,

Ima 27 year old chick from Melbourne. I serve in the Aussie Defence Force as an officer. Love the Navy but would love to learn to trade too. Pick Me!

Sirena

I love my country, visiting the UK and the rest of Europe  has made me appreciate just how amazing Australia actually is. For example I could wake up with a headache, drive to the doctor with no appointment and see the doctor within 30 min, all at no charge. Here in the UK you need to make an appointment a week ahead to see your doctor and you can only see a doctor you’re registered with. How does that work? “Hi Doc last week I had a headache”….. bullshit!

Also, our politicians are not corrupt assholes, we still have many freedoms that in recent years been stolen away from the Brits and the Americans by their leaders. So, I have unending respect for anybody courageous enough to put their life on the line to protect my amazing country. Thanks for serving in the Defence Force NavyGirl, you’re my first pick to mentor.

Ok time to step off of my soap box. Guys I know that had nothing to do with Forex but I hope you understand my reasons for picking NavyGirl.

Ok the next mentee I picked for a different reason. This guy obviously paid attention to my post stating 30 words or less. However, he was able to bend the rules in a funny way. He is a perfect fit for my trading method since my method has little to no rules. Most traders make the mistake of setting unbreakable rules for themselves, the rigidity of this form of thinking usually leads to failure. If somebody is able to bend the rules they’re much more likely to make it as a trader. None of you guys saw this image because for anti-spam reasons images do not appear in comments. However, the words in the comment were visible:

I put a lot into this… I hope it works!!! I don’t want to have to rely on my looks!

protege-stylized-expanded2

I love how Scott bent the rules in a funny and innovative way. Also, all the time Scott spent on making this image proves that he will be a dedicated mentee.

I want to thank everybody who took their time to leave a comment. Like I said I was absolutely astonished with the response. Almost 300 people applied to be mentored, it was almost impossible to pick only two people.

I am going to find a way to help out everybody who applied. While I obviously cannot privately mentor everybody I am considering shooting a few free videos on my new method. I will give everybody more details in the near future.

Thanks again to everybody, and thanks for the many kind words.

Nick

Congratulations and well done to the ‘chosen 2′. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Scott October 2, 2009 at 8:30 am

Thank you so much, Nick!
I’m containing my excitement so I don’t sound corny or fake… But this is something I wanted VERY MUCH.

And I will definitely add value for everybody here by getting involved how I can.

Good pick! Congratulations to the winners and thank you for investing your time and resources Nick.

Amanda Townsend October 2, 2009 at 10:44 am

Congrats to the winners! But remember Nick – the offer still stands to work with me – if those two catch on quick and you get bored again. Guess I am starting out my first live account alone – unless there’s another trader out there looking for a noob to mentor : ) Happy Weekend everybody!!!

SanMiguel October 2, 2009 at 12:02 pm

Why are you going to the doctor for a headache? I thought you Aussies were supposed to be tough?!

djvanaa October 2, 2009 at 12:02 pm

tq

SanMiguel October 2, 2009 at 12:03 pm

Secondly, all politicians are corrupt, it goes with the territory :)

JTrader71 October 2, 2009 at 12:14 pm

Nice work Nick and very good reasons for your choices. Congratulations to both winners!

oldgringo October 2, 2009 at 12:28 pm

As I said in my comment, you should ask that these students pay their tuition by mentoring 2 each (4 total) when they graduate and let the chain reaction going, in one year, with 6 mentoring rounds 126 Noobs would have been through the Nick’s new system.
By the way, Scott is the best pick you could have made. Congratulations to all and us for belonging to this site.

PS October 2, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Ah! Just when I was about to win, they changed the rules. ;-) Happy Trading.

Rob October 2, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Well, for the record your first request was 20 words or more… then you revised it to 30 words or less. I replied to both. That being said, I do like your pick of the military woman from your country. That is highly respectable and kick ass that you did that. This bumps you up in my book a few notches. I look forward to your new e book and videos.

Good luck NavyGirl!!

bmw_speeder October 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Cheers to the chosen two. Glad to see there was weight put on the word count. Our group spent hours agonizing over the word-smithing. We’re looking for an oppty to get in on the next round, if there is one. Thanks for giving of yourself Nick. However, I am starting to sense the initial tones of a marketing pitch in the air. There’s going to be a sales campaign coming as a result of this experiment?

Great weekend for everyone!

@bmw_speeder:

No, I am always up front with any marketing of products.

I like to think I keep a good balance of free and paid stuff. There is much more free stuff on here than paid and I only take money for products because this site is expensive and time consuming.

@Rob:

Yes I know….. to be honest that was just a editing mistake. I usually write posts up in word and paste them in. I pasted the wrong version in but it was up for just over an hour. I made it fair though, I gave everybody who answered in the first two hours an equal chance to the people that answered later with 30 words or less. If you look though 70% of people even 12hrs after I fixed the editing mistake replied with 30 words or more.

Yeh I couldn’t pass up NavyGirl, she deserves all our thanks.

Good choosing Nick.

Chukk October 2, 2009 at 6:59 pm

Good choice Nick and good luck to the winners.

I know trying to get to the doctor can be a pain in the neck but hey, at least we let you in the country.

Phreddy October 3, 2009 at 3:05 am

Let me add my support to the winners, well done.

The whole thing was very well done, Nick, I congratulate you on your method of choosing.

Looking forward to the results to be achieved with them.

Chukk October 3, 2009 at 4:37 am

Congrats to the winners…let’s hope they’re the real deal and don’t waste this opportunity.

Cabbage October 3, 2009 at 5:47 am

Hi Nick.

When some of the top tier players from the poker training sites take on a ‘losing’ student in this fashion, they usually video every session they have together and put them up unedited for us not-so-lucky ones to watch. It works better than blogging because we get to see all the mistakes that are made, real time. We hear the questions asked and the tutors thought processes as it happens.

The mistakes the students make are the same mistakes the rest of us are making but if left to a blog or session summary they’re generally overlooked as they would not be thought of sufficient interest to document.

As these sessions go on for a few hours at a time, they’re released in 45-60 minute video sections.

If you want to see this format in action I can link you to a free video.

Cheers.

London October 3, 2009 at 6:11 am

I like your style Nick but I will say if you’re still in Scotland come the winter you’re gonna need a doctor, it gets colder than a polar bears nipple.

Thomas October 3, 2009 at 6:54 am

Congratulation to your decision and your incredible statement for Aussie-land.

Gododdin October 3, 2009 at 8:44 am

See now, I really thought I was losing the plot… I could have SWORN it was 20 words or more, and then I thought, well, I must have miss-read that (not at all like me) but my wee post was made and then it was too late to change it, so I felt like a right plonker. But no, it was CHANGED from “20 words or more” to “30 words or less”, so at least I feel a bit better now.

Congrats to the successful two!

Quattro October 3, 2009 at 9:23 am

NIck,

As a Yank I give you permission to pick our dearest leader President Obama to mentor. He could use a primer on foreign exchange rates. Considering his policies seem designed to crush the greenback. You are also especially qualified given your timely and accurate observation on universal health care.

No worries Nick – I just thought I was losing the plot is all….

@Quattro:

You guys have horrible healthcare, worse than the UK.

In Aus I could even see a doctor within 30 min if I do something as simple as stubbing my toe. If I go to the doctor and say”doc I have had headaches for a few days” he will send me to get blood tests the same day and call me in the next day with my results. This is all 100% free too. I was shocked to come here and find out that you need to wait up to 2 weeks to see a doctor. In Aus in the 1 square mile around my house by my count there are:

1. Roughly Five GP’s which are basically small practices in which a single doctor works 6-7 days per week.
2. Two medical centres that are open 24/7. There are basically big practices in which 6 or so GP’s work.
3. One specialized medical centre in which you get cat scans and blood work done.
4. A huge hospital.

I cant believe that people in the U.K. are forced to wait a week to see a doctor it makes no sense to me.

I left Australia looking for something better. Now I realize there is no country better than Australia. That is not because I am some blind patriot either, because I’m not. In the last year or so I have seen much of the world and none of it compares. So yeh Australia is a country worth protecting.

SanMiguel October 3, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Lol – personal opinion but I’ve been to Australia, it wasn’t all that – too Americanised in many ways but not so in others. However, the UK isn’t great either :) – still searching for a decent country, I don’t think there is one.

SanMiguel October 3, 2009 at 2:50 pm

All the Aussies and Kiwis come to the UK and all the UK people go to Sydney – strange.

London October 3, 2009 at 9:01 pm

just wait for the world cup (football) and then we’ll see which country is the greatest…by the way, is Australia going?

spookie94 October 4, 2009 at 8:43 pm

Good luck to the 2 winners. Do us proud. As for the rest of us, any chance you could slash the price on your ebook even more? I already bought Fetor’s and read and re-read all your free stuff. Didn’t you say earlier you had something coming out soon on candle patterns?

@London:

Not a big sports fan to be honest. I am really only into martial arts (krav maga specifically) as a sport and I played a bit of rugby union as a kid. It’s strange that I am not into football since I come from an Italian family but soccer has never really been my thing. The first and last time time I played I was about 10, I was the goalie. I did a great job of stopping the ball……… first with my stomach, then with my face. I never played again.

spookie94 October 5, 2009 at 10:52 am

Yeah, I ment your video course. Sorry
