Thought I’d Had a Heart Attack

Posted by Nick 39 Comments

Hey guys,

sorry I have been away this week. Monday morning I woke up with a very very heavy and pounding heart beat. I went right to the doctor who ran a battery of tests. He said that it was nothing serious aside from very high blood pressure. I found that very strange since I am only 24 and I am generally a fit person and I have never been over weight. Anyway, my doc told me to lay off anything stressful and completely overhaul my diet. Turns out that even if you are fit and you eat bad food your blood pressure goes up. Scary ey? Looks like the years of pizza, kebabs and beer have taken their toll!

So I spent the past few days sorting out my situation. From getting a gym membership to buying heaps of fruit and veg and removing the stress. For that reason, I neglected doing the analysis or really trading at all this week. I had a good run the past few weeks so I do not mind missing a week. Will get back on the saddle next week. Sorry for skipping the analysis this week without notice. Health always comes first!

Waking up and having your heat beating so hard it shakes the bed is pretty scary. I thought I was having a heart attack! Anyway guys, all is ok and luckily it wasn’t serious. Hope you all made heaps of pips this week!

Catch you guys next week.

    Nick,

Wow, hope you don’t have another episode like that. Wishing you the best as you work towards better health. And take some time off from forex!

  • Mark Rudder

    I’m glad you’re OK.
I learned that stress is worse than being overweight or smoking.
Humans weren’t designed to handle stress.

Nick i ingnored a bad tooth tell i couldnt bare the pain. Finally went to the dentist had him take care of it and clean my teeth.I dont no if it was the abcessed tooth or the bacteria from cleaning the gums but i had the heart pounding and broke out in a cold sweats like i was having a heart attack that night scared the hell out of me.I have had heart a heart palpatations ever since.(take medication)so take care of your health and also your teeth.

  • ruben

take it easy , your health is your wealth, godspeed in your recovery.

Assume you are getting your BP checked again. A single reading is not hypertension – three consecutive high readings could be.
Diet will not put your blood pressure up unless you are easting a ton of salt. But a crappy diet will kill you in the end.
Sounds like you had an SVT – supraventicular tachycardia. It can happen for non serious reasons, usually no obvious cause found, doesn’t always repeat and is not usually anything to worry about – but of course if you wake up with your heart pounding away at 170 a minute it is scary.
I have had high blood pressure since I was 19. Have had to take meds ever since. Runs in the family. I’m still alive and you just carry on doing what you do.

  • Gary

    Hey Nick –
Just like “six gun” I have been taking meds since I was young (25). Actually started shortly after I got engaged…and now 35 years later I still remind my wife that it’s really her fault.

Maybe it’s in part due to your move to Scotland. I was there a few years ago while my son was studying at St. Andrews. Of course I fell in love with both the Haggis, and the deep fried Mars bars. Washed down with a good scotch (or three).

Keep the diet clean and the exercise consistent…and take the meds if prescribed!!

Nick when you used the words “very, very” I knew it was not serious. Same thing happened to me some years back, When it happens the first time it scares the crap out of you hence we use over exagerated words like very. The heart is an incredible instrument — it at times speeds up like that and settles down — especially in your 20s and 30s even. It is only trying to prepare itself –like doing stretch exercises before a run — for the hard work it has to do in the days and years ahead. But high blood pressure is another matter and is not good. You should be thankful as it is an awakening call. You now need to be passionate about optimum health education as you are about trading. Optimum health in the end usually boils down to lots of fruits and vegies ( I am a vegetarian for 20 years now), exercise (I absolutely love and enjoy going to the gym and long jogging –swim and weights and yoga), adequate sleep (very important) –the end. On yes, a bit of sex here and there would not hurt.

    Your health’s #1. Glad you’re okay

  • Aiman

Thanks god you are fine Nick. Keep on doing sports and things will be fine :)

  • eric4405

Glad to know it wasn’t overly serious. Be sure to monitor your BP for a while. Might want to buy a BP cuff for yourself.

  • Fetor

I wouldn’t worry about it Nick. I think the heart is an over-rated organ anyway. Go enjoy that delicious fried Cod and chips at the ol’ kebab shop.

  • Salvador

Nick, I hope everything is ok and I think our job implies lot of time in front of the computer, so is better doing sports in order to compensate the time expended in front of the computer.
    Kind regards.

  • Stephen

Nick-Do not take this lightly as time goes by. Cut the worrying and partying for a while. I am 54 years young and had high blood pressure since early 20′s. Scarry to say the least. It’s a diseace you cannot feel until it’s too late. Obey your doctors buddy and God Bless.

  • Zurina

Glad that you start to manage it when you are so young. I had a kidney transplant in 2006. Swam and biked and ate healthy since my teen age. Hypertension has been one of the most important contributing factors. Well, low salt, low stress, low cal/sugar/white floor intake have been a must since then.

Nick, you have been getting lots of advice here!
May I just add, for your interest, check out Dr. Mercola’s website… very on the ball info and advice there!
    All the best…. forewarned… forearmed!!

    Hey Nick,

Good to see you getting in to shape.

I’ve been living a healthy lifestyle for about a year now, and it feels great.

    This website:

    http://www.stronglifts.com

Really helped me in the gym as it gave me a beginner program to work on , and also the focus is more on strength training .

Nick, good on you for taking this as a call to up the health game to the next level. I, too like pbw have been vegetarian for 19 years now, and can honestly say it is worth it for the health benefits alone. Keep up the trading when you feel up to it again. God bless Nick, you are providing a great service here and I, for one am grateful.

  • Bhanu Gopal

I’ll bet a majority of share and forex traders have Hypertension. Anyway, go for a 45 minute walk atleast 5 times a week. No heavy workouts and eat sensibly. Try out a vegetarian diet most of the week.
    Take care.

Hi Nick, well you have just help reinforce Scotlands reputation as the unhealthiest place in Europe. Like many others who have resonded I have had high BP for a number of years and am on perma medication for. Best advice my doc gave me was to take daily exercise, a brisk walk just to get the heart working. And of course what do we do as traders, sit on our butts for long periods.

As for diet, minimise take away food and concentrate on healthy cooking, I mainly use the Chinese method of fast high heatwith low oil. Helps cholesteral levels too and its bloody tasty.

You’ll be fine now that you are aware and the occassional scare does serve a purpose.

Incidentally, great call on 133.47 how often has that line given up great trades over the past 10-days.

Keep well and keep taking the walks.

hmm, and there was me feeling sorry for myself for having a bad back. I neglected some good advice in my younger days that might have made a big difference now.

I Don’t want to do any finger waving uncle speaches but I truly hope you take some of the advice above and be as good to yourself as you have been to us.

Hey Nick ! Dont worry .. basically what happened is NORMAL .. its parasympathetic tone which suddenly ended when you woke up .. there is NOTHING to worry about .. go to Gym .. but make sure that you dont start pumping weights like crazy .. make sure that your trainer understands that you are not there for tonic/clonic excercises but for cardio/STAMINA work out .. btw how much was your BP ? and did you get an ECG [electro cardiogram] done ?

    PS

  • khaled
